A collective of All People’s Congress (APC) flagbearer aspirants has expressed solidarity with Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara (JFK) following his arrest and detention during proceedings surrounding the constitutional amendment challenge at the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone.

In a joint press statement issued on October 9, 2026, the aspirants said they were deeply concerned about developments at the Supreme Court and the subsequent arrest and detention of Kamara, a former Attorney General and Minister of Justice and a member of the APC’s legal team.

The aspirants described Kamara as a distinguished fellow party member and leading legal practitioner, adding that his well-being, personal dignity and fair treatment remained important to them.

They also extended their sympathy and support to Kamara, his family and colleagues during what they described as a difficult period.

While expressing their concerns, the aspirants reaffirmed their respect for judicial independence, the rule of law, constitutional due process and the protection of fundamental human rights.

They called on the Supreme Court, legal practitioners and members of the public to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could undermine the ongoing constitutional review process or deepen political divisions in the country.

The group further called for Kamara’s immediate release, arguing that such a move would help restore public confidence in the judiciary and promote peace and stability.

The statement stressed the importance of maintaining focus on constitutional democracy and national unity, urging political stakeholders, party supporters and the wider public to avoid inflammatory statements or actions that could distract from the issues at stake.

The aspirants also appealed to APC members and supporters, as well as citizens across Sierra Leone, to remain calm, conduct themselves with dignity and demonstrate solidarity through peaceful means.

The statement was signed by eight APC flagbearer aspirants: Bai Mahmoud Bangura, lawyer Ady Macauley, Alhassan Gbassay Kanu, Ansumana U. Kamara, lawyer Chernor Ramadan Maju Bah, Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, Dr. Kaifalla Marah and Dr. Victor Davies.

The statement comes amid heightened attention surrounding the constitutional amendment challenge before the Supreme Court and developments involving members of the APC’s legal team.
