Shameful! Government Abandons corpse at Aberdeen-Lumley Beach Road

A disturbing scene along the Aberdeen-Lumley Beach Road, close to the entrance of Family Kingdom, has sparked serious public concern after a dead body was reportedly seen lying along the busy road. The incident has raised questions about public safety, emergency response and the condition of one of Freetown’s most prominent tourism corridors.

The presence of a dead body in such a busy and highly frequented area is deeply concerning, particularly in a location visited daily by residents, tourists, businesses and foreign nationals. Beyond the human tragedy, the situation risks reinforcing negative perceptions about the country’s ability to properly manage and maintain areas that are central to its tourism and investment ambitions.

The incident also puts renewed focus on the responsibilities of relevant authorities, including the Freetown City Council, the National Tourist Board and other agencies responsible for public safety and the management of key public spaces. Questions must be asked about how long the body remained at the location, who was alerted, and what immediate measures were taken to secure the area and handle the situation professionally.

Sierra Leone cannot seriously market itself as a tourism and investment destination while disturbing scenes of this nature are allowed to become visible in major tourist areas. Investors need confidence, tourists need security, and citizens deserve dignity in death. The condition of important public spaces is not merely a cosmetic issue; it directly affects the image of Freetown and the country’s wider economic ambitions.

The authorities must therefore move beyond statements and public relations and demonstrate visible action. The circumstances surrounding the death should be established, the deceased should be treated with dignity, and questions surrounding the response must be answered. For a country seeking to attract tourists and investors, leaving a dead body along one of its busiest tourism routes is a matter that demands urgent answers, not silence.
