A new students’ canteen has been commissioned at the Eastern Technical University of Sierra Leone (ETU-SL), Kenema Campus, as part of efforts to improve welfare and support the university’s student community.

The facility was officially commissioned on 1 October 2026 by Dr. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, who funded the project.

The commissioning ceremony brought together university authorities, representatives of the Students’ Union Government and students, marking the completion of the facility and its formal opening for use.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Tunis announced additional support for students, pledging to pay the graduation fees of more than 30 students who have completed their academic requirements but are unable to meet the financial costs associated with graduation.

He said the intervention formed part of his broader commitment to supporting students and educational institutions, while highlighting previous contributions to infrastructure development and student-led initiatives at universities across Sierra Leone.

Dr. Tunis also called on the university administration and the Students’ Union Government to work together to ensure the effective management and long-term sustainability of the newly commissioned canteen.

The ceremony concluded with the official launch of the facility, followed by lunch served to students.
