The Deputy Executive Director of National Investment Board NIB WELCOMES IOD-SL’S CORPORATE GOVERNANCE DRIVE(INB), Fatima Mahawa Sandi, has said that, the Institute of Directors Sierra Leone (IoD-SL) would help develop a new generation of directors who lead with integrity, competence, accountability and a clear sense of purpose, she made the statement at the Rebirth and Certification Ceremony of IoD-SL, on the 25th September, 2026 at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown.

She described the rebirth as a crucial moment for national development, saying economic transformation requires not just capital but also good corporate governance. She outlined NIB’s reforms to improve the business environment, including the Online Business Registration System (OBRS), due for launch in November 2026, and a forthcoming reviewed and consolidated business law. She said these goals “cannot be achieved by government alone” and require strong partnerships with professional bodies such as IoD-SL.
Representing the Vice President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, the Trade and Industry Minister, Hon. Alpha Ibrahim Sesay, commended the Institute for surviving the test of time and welcomed its new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sierra Leone Chamber of Commerce, calling it “a win-win for the private sector.” He said the 2019 National Corporate Governance Code must now become a normal practice and urged the Institute to serve as the bridge between government and business.

Interim President of IoD-SL, Mrs. Amy E. Greene, said the occasion marks the Institute’s renewal and its commitment to strengthening leadership, professionalism and good governance at a time when public and private institutions are expected to deliver with greater accountability. She pledged to strengthen the Institute’s presence beyond Sierra Leone through its growing engagement with fellow institutes of directors and the African Corporate Governance Network (ACGN).
Delivering the keynote address, the Bank Governor of Sierra Leone, Dr. Ibrahim Stevens, explained that, good corporate governance is central to sustainable economic progress. He warned that global shocks threaten recent stability and that boards must plan ahead for inflation, exchange rate and interest rate risks, since weak oversight can undermine even a sound business.

Dr. Stevens noted IoD-SL’s role in continuous professional development. He urged the new directors to put: stewardship, independent challenge, oversight, ethical leadership and accountability at the center of their service. He called on the rebirth to set a higher governance standard with competence matched by integrity and authority matched by accountability.

Mr. Kobi Walker, the Rebirth and Certification Committee Chairman, encouraged participants to leave the celebration with a renewed commitment, stronger collaboration and a greater determination to build an Institute worthy of the confidence placed in it. Certificates were then presented to the 15 graduates in Corporate Governance.
