The newly appointed Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Abu Martin Kanneh, has outlined a leadership approach centred on teamwork, transparency and improved revenue mobilisation as he takes charge of the institution where he has served for more than two decades.

During his vetting before the Appointment Committee, Kanneh voluntarily declared his assets and those of his family, a move described by the Leader of Government Business as a novelty among public appointees.

Speaking about his leadership style, Kanneh said he believes strongly in collective effort and the importance of building an effective team to address institutional challenges.

He noted that leadership requires flexibility, saying he is prepared to lead “from the front or the back” depending on the circumstances and the needs of the organisation.

On revenue mobilisation, the new Commissioner General identified the informal sector as a key area requiring increased attention, noting that revenue leakages are more likely to occur within the sector.

He pledged to strengthen efforts to improve compliance with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) through greater engagement with NRA staff and increased public awareness.

Kanneh also said the Authority would take a targeted approach to emerging challenges by first identifying affected areas and then strengthening engagement and interventions to address them.

The Ministry of Finance has proposed a performance contract to guide Kanneh’s tenure, with expectations that the framework will support measurable improvements in the Authority’s performance and revenue collection.

His appointment has reportedly been welcomed by staff and colleagues within the NRA, with one colleague describing the appointment as receiving “the largest accolades from your colleagues,” reflecting confidence in his experience and leadership.

Having served the Authority for more than 20 years, Kanneh is expected to draw on his institutional experience as he leads efforts to strengthen revenue mobilisation, improve compliance and enhance the overall performance of the NRA.
