A fresh political debate has emerged within Sierra Leone’s ruling establishment after comments by Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh and a swift response from First Lady Fatima Maada Bio appeared to present differing interpretations of President Julius Maada Bio’s remarks on the country’s future leadership.

The exchange followed the President Bio Leadership Colloquium, where the President addressed young people during a dialogue session.

The controversy began when Chief Minister Sengeh posted a message suggesting that Sierra Leone’s next President would be under the age of 45 and would continue policies focused on young people.

“The Next President of Sierra Leone will be less than 45 years old and will work for the youth as Julius Maada Bio has started!” he wrote.

His statement quickly attracted public attention, with many interpreting it as a bold prediction about the ruling party’s future leadership direction and possible succession plans ahead of the next presidential election.

However, First Lady Fatima Bio publicly challenged the Chief Minister’s interpretation, insisting that the President’s words should be repeated accurately and not altered.

“When the President speaks, we the people should repeat exactly what was said. Our job is not to misquote him, because that is misleading and spreads misinformation. Our next president will be a ‘Man or a Woman’ — the word of HE,” she responded.

Her comments have fueled speculation of an internal disagreement over President Bio’s successor and emerging tensions within the ruling SLPP.

Political observers say the exchange reflects growing interest and positioning ahead of the 2028 leadership race within the party.
