HON. ALHAJI MUSA TARAWALLY
Political, Business and Philanthropic Profile
Hon. Alhaji Musa Tarawally is a distinguished and influential Sierra Leonean politician, businessman, and philanthropist, serving as a delegate and Grand Chief Patron of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP). He is a leading candidate for the early (within six months) 2027 SLPP flagbearer delegates’ convention, where he will be voted on as the SLPP presidential candidate to contest the 2028 general elections.
Political Heritage & Early Activism:
Hon. Tarawally’s political lineage traces back to his family, especially his grandfather, a founding SLPP member and respected spiritual adviser to the core founders (Sir Milton Margai, Sir Albert Margai, Siaka P. Stevens, John Karefa-Smart, Sir Banja Tejansie, P.C. Julius Gulama, P.C. A.G. Caulker, P.C. Sese Koker, Chief Kalawa, Chief Dura, Chief Koblo Quee, Chief Bai Farma Tass, including Alhaji Chief Alimamy Muktarru-Kallay, founder of the All Peoples Congress (APC), to name but a few), and his father, an aide and doubles lawn tennis partner to Sierra Leone’s first Prime Minister, Sir Milton Margai. He began active party involvement in 1989 as a member of the Young Generation during secondary school.
Hon. Musa Tarawally became a district Young Generation leader in 1996 and district chairman in 2002.
Democracy & Restoration:
Hon. Musa Tarawally and his fellow students across the country organized a national demonstration against the One-Party system and in support of a democratic multi-party system in 1990, which exerted pressure on the APC one-party regime to legislate and allow multi-party democracy in Sierra Leone.
Following the overthrow of the SLPP regime by the AFRC junta in 1997, Hon. Musa Tarawally, along with core SLPP members and patriots, went into exile with the late President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah and his government. Hon. Tarawally and a few of his Young Generation colleagues initiated the movement for the restoration of democracy and monitored international sanctions placed on the junta government. Hon. Tarawally and his colleagues collaborated with ECOMOG and other international forces to remove the junta and restore democracy for the people of Sierra Leone.
Member of Parliament
Hon. Musa Tarawally served as a Member of Parliament from 2003 to 2007. As a Member of Parliament, Hon. Tarawally served on key committees, championed debates and motions for the establishment of key government institutions. His parliamentary career provided valuable experience at the legislative level before his transition to a senior executive position.
Ministerial Experience:
Hon. Tarawally has held three senior ministerial/cabinet positions:
Resident Minister of the Southern Region – Responsible for local governance, regional security coordination, peacebuilding, and monitoring of development projects.
Minister of Internal Affairs – Responsible for internal security sector management, policy development, and supervision of the security sectors (Sierra Leone Police Force, Immigration, Correctional Services, National Civil Registration, National Drugs Enforcement Agency, National Fire Force, and Transnational Organized Crime Unit).
Minister of Lands, Country Planning and the Environment – Responsible for policy development, land management and administration, protection of land rights, urban planning and building permits, custodianship of public land, and the administration of leases. Responsible for environmental protection and impact assessment, showcasing his versatility in governance across security, regional development, and environmental policy.
Presidential Bids:
In 2018, Hon. Musa Tarawally strategically ran for president two months before the elections, then declared support for Julius Maada Bio-led SLPP and championed the run-off campaign that secured victory for the Sierra Leone People’s Party and Julius Maada Bio.
Business & Philanthropy:
After he ceased to be an actively serving government minister, Hon. Musa Tarawally established a finance and consultancy firm in 2016 in several African countries to mobilize foreign direct investment to Africa on a partnership basis. He is also investing in mining, industries, hospitality, health centers, and real estate development.
Hon. Tarawally supports community development initiatives through economic empowerment grants to cooperative societies, youth empowerment programs, support for religious (Muslim and Christian) sectors, and vulnerable families.
