All People’s Congress (APC) presidential aspirant Ady Macauley has called on the party’s Members of Parliament to remain firm on the party’s position as Parliament prepares to consider the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2025.

Macauley described the proposed legislation as one of the most consequential political decisions Sierra Leone could make, arguing that its implications could extend well beyond the country’s next election cycle and shape the nation’s political landscape for decades.

In a statement, the APC presidential aspirant reaffirmed what he described as the party’s “unwavering position” in support of the First Past the Post (FPTP) electoral system and the retention of the 55% threshold for presidential elections.

According to Macauley, the position has received widespread support from citizens, traditional leaders and religious communities across the country.

He subsequently directed his appeal to APC lawmakers, reminding them of what he described as their responsibility to their constituents and the wider Sierra Leonean public.

“To our APC MPs: We have stood with you. Now the whole nation, your constituents, are watching,” Macauley stated.

He urged the lawmakers to “stand firm for what is right for Sierra Leone,” insisting that the APC has sufficient numbers to secure what he described as a vital electoral reform.

Macauley also called on the MPs to adhere to what he referred to as the party’s “Iron Clad protocol,” warning that their decisions during the parliamentary vote would be remembered by history.

“History will hold you to account for this vote. Do not fail our people,” he said.

His statement comes amid intense political debate over the proposed constitutional amendments, particularly provisions relating to the presidential election threshold and the electoral system.

Macauley concluded his message by praying for the safety and wellbeing of APC lawmakers as they carry out their parliamentary duties.
