A significant step toward promoting women’s well-being was taken as the TEAS Tech Foundation, in collaboration with She4Peace, hosted a seminar focused on women’s mental health and emotional resilience.

Held under the theme “The Weight We Carry: Stress, Self-Worth, and Healing Spaces for Women,” the event brought together mental health professionals, educators, and advocates to discuss the psychological and emotional challenges faced by women in society.

Building Confidence and Self-Worth

The first session was delivered by Ms. Rugie, an educator and lecturer, who spoke on “What Builds Confidence.” She explained that women’s confidence is shaped by access to education and skills training, economic independence, and strong support networks among women.

Through interactive reflection exercises, participants were encouraged to examine the messages and influences that shaped their upbringing. She concluded with a key message: “When a woman knows her worth, she does not need anyone’s permission to lead.”

Understanding Stress and Its Impact

The second presentation was delivered by Mr. Magnus Conteh, a global mental health expert with over 20 years of experience. He focused on stress, its causes, and its impact on women.

He identified family expectations, societal pressures, and academic demands as major sources of stress. He also highlighted common symptoms such as fatigue and emotional detachment.

Mr. Conteh encouraged mindfulness and self-care, urging participants to build supportive relationships, which he described as “finding your people” during difficult times.

Trauma Awareness and Healing

Madam Nurse Senesie led a session on trauma, defining it as the emotional, psychological, and physical response to deeply distressing experiences.

She explained that healing often begins with open communication and sharing experiences with trusted individuals. According to her, speaking about trauma can help reduce emotional burden, improve understanding of feelings, and create a sense of safety.

She further stressed that recovery requires trust and emotionally safe environments where individuals can freely express themselves without fear.

Depression and Anxiety Awareness

The seminar also featured presentations from representatives of the Mental Health Coalition Sierra Leone, including Amadu Kamara and Abdul Rahman Sesay.

Their session focused on depression and anxiety, outlining their symptoms, behavioural changes, and treatment options. They noted that depression can affect emotional, physical, and social functioning, while anxiety becomes a concern when it is persistent and overwhelming.

Participants were also guided on how to recognize early signs and seek appropriate professional support.

Promoting Safe Spaces for Women

Overall, the seminar served as a platform for education, dialogue, and empowerment. It reinforced the importance of creating safe spaces where women can openly share experiences, seek help, and prioritise their mental health.

The organisers reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining such initiatives aimed at equipping women with the knowledge, confidence, and support needed to navigate life’s challenges.
