Former Commissioner of the Independent Media Commission, Alhaji Dauda Musa Bangura, has called on young people to make responsible use of the media as a tool for national development.

He made this appeal during the All People’s Congress (APC) Diaspora Conference held in London, United Kingdom, on Saturday, 28th March 2026.

Addressing participants at the conference, Bangura emphasized that in today’s digital age, young people are no longer passive consumers of information but active players shaping the media landscape. He noted that with access to smartphones and the internet, youths now have the power to inform, educate, and influence society.

Drawing from his experience as one of the youngest former commissioners at the IMC, he said young people must understand the responsibility that comes with this influence. He warned against the misuse of media platforms for misinformation, hate speech, and political manipulation, stressing that such actions could undermine national unity and development.

“Young people must stand for truth over propaganda, peace over conflict, and development over division,” he stated.

He further highlighted the important roles young people play in the media, describing them as voices of the voiceless, agents of change, and champions of truth and accountability. According to him, through journalism, social media, and digital content creation, young people can expose corruption, promote peace, and bring attention to issues affecting their communities.

Bangura also underscored the importance of innovation among young media practitioners, noting that their creativity and digital skills are transforming how information is shared in Sierra Leone and beyond. He encouraged young people to embrace ethical journalism, continuous learning, and the use of media platforms to inspire positive change.

In his concluding remarks, he reminded the audience that young people are not just leaders of tomorrow but leaders of today, urging them to take responsibility and use the media as a force for good.

The APC Diaspora Conference brought together party supporters and stakeholders from across the globe, focusing on youth engagement, national development, and the role of the diaspora in shaping Sierra Leone’s future.
