In the wake of a devastating fire that engulfed Lumley Market on Sunday afternoon, Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr visited the site to assess the damage and offer solace to affected traders and shop owners.

Accompanied by Councilor Unisa Kamara, members of the Freetown City Council (FCC) Metropolitan Police, and Lumley Traders Chairlady Mammy Morlai Kamara, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr toured the charred remains of the market, expressing deep sympathy for the victims.

“It was heartbreaking to see the devastation caused by yet another fire in our city,” the Mayor said. “Many traders have lost everything, with their goods reduced to ashes.”

The cause of the fire has yet to be officially confirmed by the Sierra Leone Fire Force, but preliminary reports suggest that an electrical surge may have sparked the blaze.

During her visit, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr emphasized the need for immediate support for the affected traders, many of whom rely on the market as their primary source of income.

She assured victims that the Freetown City Council would work closely with relevant stakeholders to provide relief and explore long-term solutions to prevent future tragedies.
