The passing of Professor Alhaji Dr. Mohamed Haroun Dahniya “Do for God Doctor” on Friday, May 11, 2018, marked the end of an era for the medical fraternity and the nation of Sierra Leone. Leaving this world at the age of 82 at the Choithram Memorial Hospital, Professor Dahniya left an indelible legacy as a pioneering patriot, a brilliant radiologist, and a deeply devout man of faith. Today, looking back on a life spent in tireless service to humanity, we still remember a life entirely dedicated to human welfare, medical advancement, and national service.

Born on September 30, 1935, in the historic Foulah Town community of Freetown, young Mohamed Haroun Dahniya early on demonstrated the sharp intellect and academic discipline that would define his historic career. His pursuit of academic excellence eventually took him abroad, where he specialised in the intricate field of radiology.
His exceptional diagnostic skills and academic prowess did not go unnoticed. He was highly sought after internationally, spending years practicing and lecturing in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (Fujairah). In the Middle East, he not only excelled in his medical career but also deeply enriched his life by immersing himself in advanced Islamic and Arabic studies. Yet, despite the allure of lucrative offers and prestigious positions abroad, his heart never left Sierra Leone.

When Professor Dahniya returned home, he stepped into a healthcare system in desperate need of his expertise. For a significant period, he and Dr. Gordon Harris stood as the only two qualified radiologists in the entire country. The weight of the nation’s diagnostic health rested squarely on their shoulders, and Professor Dahniya bore it with unmatched grace, precision, and stamina. Recognising that a nation cannot rely on just a few individuals, he transformed himself into a passionate educator. As a medical professor, he dedicated his later years to training, mentoring, and inspiring the next generation of Sierra Leonean medical officers. He fiercely advocated for local doctors to specialise in radiology, single-handedly laying the groundwork to bridge the country’s critical specialist deficit.

Beyond the white coat and the lecture halls, Professor Dahniya was a man of profound humility and spiritual devotion. As an Alhaji, his faith guided his ethics, his interactions with patients, and his love for his community. He was a devoted family man, a loyal friend, and a beacon of hope to the Foulah Town community where his journey began. He was honoured for his deep devotion to his family and the broader communities of Foulah Town, Fourah Bay, and Aberdeen. He was survived by his brother, Abdul Hamid, and his four daughters: Haki, Hawa, Faria, and Zainab. His beloved wife of 57 years, Haja Humu, has since reunited with him, having passed away on December 29, 2025. Following his peaceful passing, he was laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites on Sunday, May 13, 2018, at the Aku Mohammedan Cemetery on Kennedy Street.

Professor Alhaji Dr. Mohamed Haroun Dahniya’s life was a symbol of what it means to love one’s country. He gave his intellect to the world, but he gave his heart and his life’s work to Sierra Leone. As we continue to remember him, we extend our deepest gratitude to a man who looked at a struggling healthcare system and chose to build a bridge toward its future. His memory lives on in the thousands of lives he diagnosed and cared for, the doctors he trained, and the family that carries his noble name.

May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him Aljannah Firdaus, and continue to bless the family and nation he left behind.
