The President of the Sierra Leone Football Association (Sierra Leone Football Association), Babadi Kamara, together with the General Secretary, Mohamed Benson Bawoh, on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, attended the partial handover ceremony of the $40 million China-Aid project for the rehabilitation of the Sierra Leone National Stadium at the Siaka Stevens Stadium in Freetown.

The event, held following a special invitation from the Ministry of Sports, brought together senior government officials, sports administrators, and international partners, marking a key milestone in the ongoing renovation of the country’s premier sporting facility.

Among the dignitaries present were the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Zhao Yong, Minister of Sports Augusta James-Teima, Executive Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Mohamed Alphakha Conteh, and NSA Board Chairman Ibrahim Nyelenkeh, alongside other senior officials. The project forms part of China’s continued development support to Sierra Leone.

So far, major components including the practising field, basketball court, volleyball court, and swimming pool have been fully completed and officially handed over to the Ministry of Sports for public use. The main stadium bowl remains under construction and is expected to be completed soon, with upgraded individual seating and additional facilities designed to meet FIFA and CAF standards.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Sports Augusta James-Teima commended SLFA President Babadi Kamara for what she described as the remarkable transformation of Sierra Leone football within a short period in office. She praised him as “a leader setting the pace for other sporting disciplines in the country,” and called on stakeholders to acknowledge his developmental vision, inviting participants to applaud his contribution to football development.

The SLFA President’s presence at the ceremony underscored the Association’s continued commitment to national sports development, partnership building, and collaboration with government and international partners in advancing sports infrastructure and football growth in Sierra Leone.
