The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has confirmed Morocco as the venue for Sierra Leone’s home fixture against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, scheduled for Tuesday, 17 November 2026.
In a press release, the SLFA said it initially explored the possibility of hosting the match in neighbouring Guinea or Liberia to allow Sierra Leonean supporters to attend and cheer on the Leone Stars.
However, Guinea was unable to accommodate the fixture due to a scheduling conflict involving its national Under-23 team, while Liberia also had a match scheduled at its stadium on the same date.
The Association subsequently approached the Confederation of African Football (CAF), requesting that the fixture be moved to Monday, 16 November 2026, in an effort to find an alternative venue closer to Sierra Leone.
According to the SLFA, DR Congo did not agree to the proposed change and maintained its position to play on the original date of Tuesday, 17 November, in accordance with the CAF fixture schedule.
Following these developments, Morocco was selected as the alternative venue for the encounter.
The SLFA expressed regret that the match could not be hosted closer to home, which would have made it easier for Sierra Leonean supporters to attend. The Association also apologised for any inconvenience the decision may cause and thanked the public and Leone Stars fans for their continued understanding, patience and support.
The Association reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the national team receives the necessary support and encouragement as it continues its campaign to qualify for the 2027 AFCON tournament.
