Sierra Leone’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Hon. Alpha Sesay Esq., has arrived in Switzerland to head the country’s delegation for the upcoming Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The review, scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, 2026, will see Sierra Leone’s human rights record examined for the fourth time under the UPR mechanism. The process provides an opportunity for member states to assess progress made, identify challenges, and recommend further reforms aimed at strengthening human rights protections.

Leading the delegation alongside the Attorney-General are Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Francess Paigie Alghali, Principal State Counsel Alimamy Sesay, Thomas Freeman from the Office of the Attorney-General, Dr. David Sidikie Yambasu, Executive Adviser at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Patrick Morlai Koroma, Director of Legal, Economic and Technical Cooperation.

Upon their arrival at Geneva International Airport, the team was welcomed by Sierra Leone’s Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, Samuel U.B. Saffa, together with staff of the country’s diplomatic mission.

The UPR, created in 2006, is a peer-review mechanism through which all UN member states have their human rights records assessed on a rotating basis. It is widely regarded as an important platform for accountability, dialogue, and cooperation among nations.

Sierra Leone’s participation in the latest session highlights the government’s continued engagement with international institutions and its stated commitment to improving governance, justice, and the protection of fundamental rights.
