The Minister of Information and Communications, Hon. Mohamed Rahman Swaray leading the Sierra Leone delegation was in attendance at the opening ceremony of the 27th Session of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) Congress in Abidjan Cote d Voire. In the Minister’s delegation are: Daniel Kaitibi DG NATCOM, Brima Katta, MD SALPOST, and A. Ben- Foday, Director, NATCOM.
The congress is slated for 9th – 27th August 2021 and is being held at the Prestigious Sofitel Hotel Ivoire.
The UPU is one of the specialised agencies of the UN responsible for Universal Postal Services.
The UPU consists of 192 member countries and they meet for a Global Postal Congress once every four years to draw up a roadmap, develop strategies and agree on new regulations and directives on how the union is run for the next four years.
This is the first time the congress is being held in Subsaharan Africa in 147 years of existence of the Universal Postal Union.
Among several issues to be discussed will be: Reshaping the International Postal Network for the 21st Century using Digitalisation and Innovation, Postal Services Digitalisation and E- Commerce Development, etc.
As usual, the well articulated Hon. Minister of Information and Communications, Mohamed Rahman Swaray made a succinct statement at the Pan African Postal Union (PAPU) meeting on 8th August 2021 to the admiration of all delegates present.
Emminent personalities who made statements at Yesterday’s opening included: Mr.Patrick Achir, Prime Minister of Cote d Voire, Mr. Bishar A. Hussein, Director General of the UPU, Mr. Roger Felix Ado, Minister Digital Economy, Telecommunications and Innovation of the Republic of Cote d Voire.
Mr. Sulaiman Jiakete was the President of the 27th UPU Congress in Cote d’ Voire.
