A man accused of seriously assaulting another resident in Koya Chiefdom has been committed to stand trial before the High Court in Port Loko after a ruling by the Masiaka Magistrate Court.
Magistrate Harold Kamara ordered that Ibrahim Sorie Kanu answer to charges including wounding with intent, wounding, and assault causing actual bodily harm.
The decision was delivered on 11 May 2026 in Criminal Summons Case No. 101/2026 after the court reviewed evidence presented during committal proceedings.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on 14 April 2026 at Rosal Village in Koya Chiefdom, where the accused allegedly attacked Santigie Turay and inflicted multiple injuries.
State Prosecutor Sergeant Sesay A.M. led the case for the prosecution, while the accused reportedly appeared in court without legal counsel.
During proceedings, the prosecution submitted witness statements, medical documents, photographs of the complainant’s injuries, the formal charge sheet, and a voluntary caution statement allegedly made by the accused.
The court was told that Turay testified he was attacked near a village water well, where he was allegedly beaten with a stick. He said the assault left him with injuries to the forehead and mouth and that he was also bitten during the confrontation.
Another prosecution witness, Abdul Sesay, reportedly supported the complainant’s version of events. He told the court he found Turay bleeding and helped transport him for treatment before the matter was reported to police.
The court also considered the accused’s caution statement, in which he allegedly admitted taking part in a fight and hitting the complainant with a stick, while claiming he acted after being provoked.
Medical findings presented in court reportedly confirmed cuts to the complainant’s forehead and upper lip, along with bite marks. Photographs tendered as exhibits were also said to show visible injuries.
In delivering his ruling, Magistrate Kamara stated that at the committal stage, the court only determines whether enough evidence exists for the matter to proceed to trial.
He concluded that the prosecution had established a prima facie case and ordered that Kanu be sent to the High Court in Port Loko, where he is expected to remain in custody pending further proceedings.
