The Lawyers’ Society has urged the National Revenue Authority (National Revenue Authority) to strictly respect judicial authority and due process following reports of the sealing of the premises of Yada Williams & Associates (Yada Williams & Associates) despite an existing High Court order restraining such enforcement action.

The legal body expressed concern over allegations that tax enforcement officers, accompanied by armed police personnel and media crews, moved to shut down the law firm’s offices in apparent disregard of a court injunction reportedly issued earlier the same day.

It warned that any conduct by state institutions that undermines court orders risks eroding public confidence in the justice system and weakening the rule of law, which is central to lawful governance and tax enforcement.

The Society emphasized that while the National Revenue Authority has a statutory mandate to enforce tax compliance, such powers must be exercised within the confines of constitutional and judicial oversight, particularly where active legal proceedings are underway.

According to the Lawyers’ Society, the sealing of a legal practice under disputed circumstances raises serious concerns about interference with the independence of legal practitioners and their ability to carry out professional duties without intimidation or obstruction.

It further cautioned that enforcement actions carried out in defiance of court orders could amount to contempt of court and may have wider implications for institutional accountability.

The body therefore called on the NRA to respect the authority of the High Court and to pursue any tax-related disputes through lawful and constitutionally approved procedures.
