The Legal Access through Women Yearning for Equality Rights and Social Justice (L.A.W.Y.E.R.S.) has called for more inclusive discussions on gender-based violence (GBV), emphasising the need to recognise overlooked experiences and ensure fair and consistent accountability.

The call was made during the organisation’s 2026 Annual General Meeting (AGM), held under the theme “Advancing Gender Justice through Accountability, Inclusion, and Action.” The meeting brought together executive members, other members of the organisation, development partners and stakeholders to review progress, examine challenges and explore ways to strengthen access to justice in Sierra Leone.

During the discussions, participants questioned whether prevailing public conversations adequately reflect the diverse experiences of gender-based violence. They stressed the importance of moving beyond assumptions to recognise cases that may receive less attention, while ensuring that accountability is applied consistently, regardless of who experiences or perpetrates violence.

The meeting also reviewed L.A.W.Y.E.R.S.’ ongoing efforts to improve access to legal assistance and protection for women and girls, with participants highlighting the barriers they face when seeking justice.

They further emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between the organisation, development partners and relevant institutions to improve support systems and strengthen responses to gender-based violence.

The AGM also provided an opportunity for members and partners to exchange ideas, strengthen professional relationships and identify areas for future cooperation in advancing the organisation’s objectives.

The formal proceedings concluded with a cocktail reception, which brought members and partners together for networking and further engagement.

L.A.W.Y.E.R.S. continues to advocate for gender equality, improved access to justice and the protection of the rights and dignity of women and girls in Sierra Leone.
