The Sierra Leone Labour Congress (SLLC) has called on President Julius Maada Bio to reject the recently passed Constitutional Amendment Bill, urging him to return the legislation to Parliament for reconsideration.

In a letter dated 13 August 2026 and addressed to President Bio at State House in Freetown, the Labour Congress said the Bill had generated widespread public resentment, particularly over several of its provisions.

The Congress said it was concerned that position papers submitted by religious organisations, civil society organisations, the Labour Congress and other interest groups were not adequately considered during Parliament’s deliberations on the proposed constitutional changes.

According to the Labour Congress, the failure to consider the submissions undermines the participatory spirit of constitutional reform and could weaken public confidence in democratic governance.

The organisation also singled out provisions it believes could affect the people’s right to freely elect their Members of Parliament.

The Labour Congress argued that the Bill would effectively shift the power to determine parliamentary representatives away from citizens and place it in the hands of political parties.

It described the move as an affront to democratic principles and the sacrifices Sierra Leoneans have made to protect their rights to self-determination and to hold elected representatives accountable.

The Congress therefore appealed directly to President Bio not to assent to the Bill, but instead to remit it to Parliament for reconsideration in light of what it described as overwhelming reservations from the public.

“Accordingly, we humbly request Your Excellency to remit the Bill back to Parliament for reconsideration in light of the overwhelming reservation by the people,” the Labour Congress stated.

The SLLC also submitted its position paper on the Constitutional Amendment Bill to the President, outlining its recommendations and concerns regarding the proposed amendments.

The Labour Congress expressed confidence in President Bio’s commitment to protecting the democratic rights of Sierra Leoneans and urged him to use his constitutional authority to address the concerns surrounding the legislation.

The appeal comes amid heightened political and public debate over the Constitutional Amendment Bill following its passage in Parliament.
