FREETOWN MAYOR SCORES ANOTHER GOAL

I know many Freetonians have never wondered where their liquid waste goes once their cesspits have been emptied. It would surprise many of you to know that, until now, faecal sludge collected in Freetown ended up being indiscriminately released at the Kingtom Dumpsite. The faecal sludge seeped into the sea and nearby waterways, posing significant environmental and health hazards to the surrounding communities.

Today I was thrilled to launch the first ever faecal sludge treatment plant in Sierra Leone as part of #TransformFreetown. At the plant, the solid matter will be separated from the waste water; the solid matter will be used as fertilizer input and the waste water can be safely disposed of or used in other ways (eg. to put out fires in the main Kingtom dumpsite).

Thank you very much FCDO, GOAL (SL), EPA, Walid Bahsoon of Premier Enviro Solutions, Councillor Murray Alie Conteh, FCC staff & Kingtom/Kolleh town communities and many others for bringing this project to life. This is a true testament of what we can achieve through partnership and collaboration.
