The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has welcomed recent developments in Sierra Leone, describing the country’s renewed focus on reconciliation, unity and peace as important steps toward strengthening democratic stability.

In a statement issued on September 6, 2026, the regional bloc commended President Julius Maada Bio and the Government of Sierra Leone for their efforts to promote national reconciliation, particularly following the decision to discontinue the charges against former President Ernest Bai Koroma.

According to ECOWAS, the decision has created an opportunity for Sierra Leone to advance dialogue, rebuild trust and strengthen national cohesion.

The Commission also welcomed the return of former President Koroma to Sierra Leone, following arrangements that facilitated his safe return to the country.

ECOWAS particularly acknowledged the role played by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in supporting the process, including hosting former President Koroma and contributing to arrangements for his return.

The regional body said the developments demonstrate the importance of dialogue and cooperation in addressing political differences and preserving peace and stability within member states.

ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Government and people of Sierra Leone, as well as international partners, to consolidate peace, democratic governance, stability and sustainable development.

The Commission’s statement comes at a time when Sierra Leone continues to pursue measures aimed at strengthening political dialogue and national unity, with reconciliation increasingly viewed as a key component of the country’s democratic consolidation.

ECOWAS said it remains committed to supporting Sierra Leone as the country works toward building a more peaceful, stable and inclusive democratic environment.
