Concerns have been raised over public safety at Kallon Car Park in Freetown following the appearance of a visibly damaged billboard carrying an advertisement for Rokel Commercial Bank.

A photograph taken at the site shows the billboard with damaged and displaced panels, exposed metal framing and sections that appear unstable. The structure stands beside a busy public area where pedestrians, traders and other members of the public gather and go about their daily activities.

The billboard’s condition has prompted calls for an urgent safety assessment by the relevant authorities and those responsible for the installation, maintenance and regulation of outdoor advertising structures.

Given its location near an area frequently used by the public, concerns have been raised about the potential consequences should any part of the structure fall. Such an incident could cause injuries or damage to nearby property.

Although the photograph does not establish the structural integrity of the billboard or confirm that collapse is imminent, the visible damage has raised questions about whether the structure has been adequately maintained and whether precautionary measures are necessary.

Residents, commuters, traders and other users of Kallon Car Park are therefore calling for the relevant authorities and responsible operators to assess the structure and take appropriate measures to protect the public.

If the billboard is found to be unsafe, the responsible parties should secure the surrounding area and arrange for the necessary repairs, removal or replacement by qualified personnel.

Rokel Commercial Bank has also been urged to take notice of the condition of the billboard displaying its advertisement and engage the relevant parties to establish responsibility for its maintenance and safety. However, the presence of the bank’s advertisement does not, in itself, establish that the bank owns or maintains the structure.

The situation has renewed attention on the importance of proper installation, regular inspection and timely maintenance of outdoor advertising structures, particularly those located near busy public spaces.

An urgent professional assessment would help determine the actual level of risk and the appropriate steps needed to address any identified safety concerns before an incident occurs.
