The Civil Rights Coalition has welcomed the Government of Sierra Leone’s decision to discontinue the treason proceedings against former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, describing the move as a significant step toward promoting national peace, unity, and reconciliation.

In a press statement signed by its National Coordinator, Alphonso Manley, the Coalition commended President Dr. Julius Maada Bio and the Government for what it described as a bold and statesmanlike decision that places the national interest above political differences.

According to the Coalition, the decision demonstrates a commitment to strengthening national cohesion and fostering unity among Sierra Leoneans.

The Coalition also acknowledged the constructive roles played by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), and other stakeholders whose collective efforts it said contributed to the positive development.

Describing the moment as an opportunity for healing, the Civil Rights Coalition called on President Julius Maada Bio and former President Ernest Bai Koroma to continue engaging in the spirit of mutual respect, reconciliation, and cooperation for the benefit of the country.

It expressed hope that continued dialogue between the two leaders would further strengthen peace and national stability.

The Coalition further commended the Government for successfully hosting the ongoing ECOWAS Mid-Year Coordination Summit, which will culminate in the meeting of Heads of State and Government on 19 July 2026. It praised President Bio’s leadership in bringing the high-level regional gathering to Sierra Leone, expressing confidence that the summit would enhance the country’s standing within the sub-region while reinforcing its commitment to regional peace, stability, economic cooperation, and democratic governance.

Concluding its statement, the Civil Rights Coalition urged all Sierra Leoneans, regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity, religion, or regional background, to place the nation’s interests first. It called on citizens to embrace peace, national cohesion, constructive dialogue, and respect for democratic institutions as the foundation for building a united, peaceful, and prosperous Sierra Leone.
