Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda, is participating in the Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges’ Conference in Kingston, Jamaica, alongside Chief Justices and senior judicial officers from across the Commonwealth.

The conference, held under the theme “Sustainable Justice: For Today, For Tomorrow, For All,” has brought together more than 540 delegates from about 44 jurisdictions, including approximately 30 Chief Justices and other senior judicial leaders.

Sierra Leone is represented by Chief Justice Kamanda and eight Judges of the Superior Court of Judicature, with three of the country’s judges selected to make presentations on contemporary issues affecting the administration of justice.

Justice Mark Ngegba made a presentation on “Military Justice: What Next?” on Monday, while Justice Adrian J. Fisher is scheduled to speak on “Vulnerable Witnesses or Awkward Litigants.”

Justice Fatmatta Bintu Alhadi is also expected to address the conference on “Protecting Ourselves from Online and Physical Threats” on Wednesday, September 23.

Chief Justice Kamanda also participated in a meeting of Commonwealth Chief Justices on September 19, which brought together judicial leaders from jurisdictions including England and Wales, Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, Uganda and Lesotho, as well as representatives from other parts of the Commonwealth.

The Sierra Leone delegation includes Supreme Court Justices Sengu Koroma and Fatmatta Bintu Alhadi; Court of Appeal Justices Michael P. Mami, Tonia Barnett and Aiah Simeon Allieu; and High Court Justices Lornard Taylor, Adrian J. Fisher and Mark Ngegba.

The conference provides a platform for judicial leaders and legal professionals to exchange experiences and discuss emerging challenges in the administration of justice, as well as approaches to strengthening judicial systems across Commonwealth jurisdictions.

Sierra Leone’s participation, including the presentations by three judges, provides an opportunity for the Judiciary to share its experiences and contribute to discussions on contemporary issues affecting judiciaries internationally.

The Judiciary said Chief Justice Kamanda remains committed to strengthening Sierra Leone’s justice system and creating opportunities for judicial officers to engage in regional and international judicial forums.
