The Betts Group has launched The Betts Insurance, a new general insurance company seeking to expand access to insurance services through technology and customer-focused products.

The company held a soft launch on Friday, September 18, 2026, at Lagoonda, Aberdeen, Freetown, bringing together business leaders, insurance industry stakeholders, regulators, professionals and other guests.

The new company is headed by Chief Executive Officer Alfred I. Akibo-Betts, who formally unveiled The Betts Insurance as part of the Betts Group’s expansion into the insurance sector.

Speaking on the company’s vision, Akibo-Betts highlighted the importance of providing insurance services that respond to the changing needs of Sierra Leoneans, with particular emphasis on technology, accessibility and customer service.

The Betts Insurance says its operations will combine conventional insurance protection with digital services, allowing customers to obtain insurance cover through digital channels, make payments through mobile-money platforms and receive approved claim payouts through digital wallets.

According to the company, the digital-first approach is intended to reduce paperwork, simplify the process of purchasing insurance and make insurance products easier for customers to understand and access.

Board member Claudius Bart-William, in remarks at the launch, stressed the importance of professionalism, accountability, customer confidence and long-term sustainability in building the new institution.

He noted that the success of the company would depend on its ability to provide dependable services and build confidence among policyholders, while responding to the needs of Sierra Leone’s growing economy.

Commissioner Arthur Yaskey of the Sierra Leone Insurance Commission (SLICOM) also addressed the gathering, emphasising the importance of compliance with Sierra Leone’s insurance laws and regulatory requirements.

Yaskey stressed that companies operating in the insurance sector must adhere to established regulatory standards, while prioritising consumer protection and responsible business practices.

The Betts Insurance says it is licensed by SLICOM under the Insurance Act 2016 to operate across four broad classes of insurance: Fire, Marine & Aviation, Motor and Miscellaneous.

Its published product portfolio includes motor insurance, home insurance, personal accident cover, goods-in-transit insurance, professional indemnity, public liability, employers’ liability and other specialised insurance products.

The company also offers products targeting commercial transport operators and everyday commuters, including passenger and driver accident covers for kekehs and okadas, as well as its “Insai Tong Waka” personal accident cover.

The Betts Insurance says customers will be able to obtain quotes online, make payments through Orange Money, Afrimoney, cards or wallet balances, and receive their policies digitally after payment.

Customers will also be able to submit claims online, track the claims process and receive approved payouts through their digital wallets, according to the company.

The launch marks the Betts Group’s expansion into Sierra Leone’s insurance industry, with the company positioning technology and digital accessibility at the centre of its operating model.

The Betts Insurance now begins operations under the leadership of Alfred I. Akibo-Betts, with the company saying it will focus on accessible insurance products, digital services, efficient claims processing and customer service.
