Opposition leader in Parliament, Abdul Kargbo, has expressed concern over rising tensions at the Sierra Leone–Guinea border, describing recent developments as “deeply worrisome” following reports that Guinean security forces allegedly fired tear gas at more than 1,000 Sierra Leoneans being deported.
In a statement, Kargbo said the reported incident reflects a disregard for the dignity and safety of Sierra Leonean citizens, calling for urgent attention from the authorities.
He further stated that since the discovery of cocaine in an official Government of Sierra Leone vehicle, relations between Sierra Leone and Guinea appear to have become strained, a development he suggested may be linked to the current tensions at the border.
According to him, it is imperative for the Government of Sierra Leone to take appropriate action regarding a suspected drug baron reportedly wanted by Dutch authorities, in order to restore national credibility on the international stage.
Kargbo emphasized that the alleged mistreatment of Sierra Leonean nationals abroad is unacceptable and requires a firm and coordinated national response from the government.
He called on state authorities to engage diplomatic channels to address the situation and ensure the protection of citizens, while also safeguarding the country’s international reputation.
