29th June, 2021, Njala University the hub for Sierra Leone WAVE Country Project is this morning discussing with stakeholders the review of the National Action Plan on Cassava Streak virus at the Matru Jong District Council hall, Matru Jong, Bonthe District, Southern Sierra Leone.
Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Bo and Njala campuses, Njala University in the persons of Professors Bashiru Mohamed Koroma and Mohamed Syed Fofanah, Local authorities, Council representatives, representatives from the Fourah Bay University of Sierra Leone, Environment Protection Agency, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Abu Bakar Karim, Regional and District staff of the Ministry, FAO Technical Working Group, President Farmers Federation, Sierra Leone Researchers, Ph.D. and Masters students of the WAVE project, Njala University are in attendance.
Madam Raymonda Johnson, Associate Lecturer, and Head Crop Protection Division, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry recounted that the purpose of the workshop is to fully integrate the National Cassava Action Plan for Sierra Leone with the One-Health approach.
This according to her will lead to a comprehensive harmonization in the areas of surveillance, reporting, and disease outbreak response mechanisms.
Having a reviewed National Action Plan on Cassava aligned with the One-Health approach will pool resources, facilities, expertise, and human resources, she recounted.
Country Director, WAVE Sierra Leone, Dr. Alusiane Samura gave an overview of the WAVE Project in Sierra Leone and also the imminent threat of the Cassava streak virus in Sierra Leone and the urgent need to have a National Action Plan targeting critical players in tandem with the Regional approach.
