Statement by AMBASSADOR Maria BRewer

January 7, 2021

Storming of the United States Capitol

The United States Congress has completed its Constitutionally mandated count of the Electoral College vote and affirmed the election of Joseph R. Biden, Jr. and Kamala D. Harris.  They will be sworn into office and a peaceful transfer of power that will occur on January 20, 2021.  The criminals who committed violent acts of terror against our democracy yesterday will be held accountable in accordance with the rule of law in the United States.  Our heartfelt gratitude to the many citizens of Sierra Leone who sent messages of support during yesterday’s difficult hours.  The enduring friendship and partnership between the United States and the people of Sierra Leone will endure and thrive as we recommit to supporting and living up to our democratic ideals.

We recognize that January 6 also marked a very sad anniversary in Sierra Leone, that of the RUF entering Freetown in 1999.  We remember the many who suffered and died during that attack, which also reminds us that liberty and democracy must be continually safeguarded.

  1. Yes indeed January 6 had cast a shadow of sadness to both America and Sierra Leone. It is of great concern that the events that took place in both cities, the nation’s capital of Washington and Freetown capital city of Sierra Leone will never occur again where lives and property were lost for the wrong reasons. However lessons learned must be put to practice and that is. We, I mean as a people of both countries must be a respecter of the trruth and discourage lies in all its forms. Lie is monstrous and if allowed to grow into the head of Medusa would produce many serpents. The situation that led to the massacre of innocent civilians in Sierra Leone were ambiguous and treacherous. The tribal claims which were attributed to it were infinitesimally true, while the bulk of was a baloney of lies, selfishness, greed, and wickedness. The fact now remains to be did leaders who aspire to rule in these countries and beyond would reflect and accept the reality that deceitfulness and greed for power will not yield good results but anarchy and hostility at least this is what happened in Sierra Leone. For the USA this might slightly be different because the USA has passed this point supposedly after the American war of independence in 1776. As a respecter of human rights and democracy it is unprecedented to see what happened in the nation’s capital capital on the 6th of January. The deterring factor now is to be proactive and guard against corruption and give equal rights and justice to all human irrespective of race, religion gender, and injustices of so on and so on. I am appearing to our lawmakers to be firm with our law and work tirelessly on integrity and save our nations and the world at large. Let peace reign.
