THE ESTUARY RESORT : A New Touristic Attraction in Sierra Leone

By Alhaji Dauda Musa Bangura

Sierra Leone is endowed with natural beauty, evident in its natural coastal line, attractive beaches, its unique mountains, waterfalls, flora and fauna among a host of other attributes that this small West African country possesses.

Indisputably, these attributes have been the magnetic forces that have always attracted tourists into this country, as was the case of a tourism boom, up to the late 1980s after which lamentably the country relapsed into a senseless war that affected every facet of the nation, painting it in a bad light and obviously badly affected the tourist industry that was doing so well with all its attendant positive advantages.

Today, we have started witnessing a revolutionary positive turn in the tourism sector as the country is to a large extent peaceful and the Government, through the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs is  making frantic efforts to once again revamp a moribund sector which by all indication could be an important engine for growth.

Indeed, many nationals as well as visiting tourists cannot hold back their admiration and love  for the hidden beauty or treasures that this country is blessed with.

It will interest many to learn that over the weekend many who visited the Estuary Resort of John Obey, in the extreme end of Freetown, did not hide but expressed their intense admiration, in various ways,  for not only the Resort’s natural features but the  services it offers as well as the extensive work that the Management of the resort had recently done to ensure that visitors always feel at home to be there in order to relax and derive value for money.

The Estuary Resort of John Obey, which lies along the beautiful Freetown Peninsula, is one of the greatest and  best places to be in Sierra Leone and which friends, family members, lovers can visit and indeed cannot forget it in a hurry or ‘giffy’.

Nested between the Atlantic  Ocean and the beautiful Freetown Peninsula this makes the Estuary Resort of John Obey quite unique from other places in Sierra Leone especially as its natural lake runs from the mountain.

With a balcony built there by the Management from which visitors could get  nice views, it always feels good for someone to hear the ebbing and tiding of the ocean, to watch the different species of birds flying and perching on the bank of the estuary.

It is worthy to note that both the young and old  do visit and spend weekends at the Estuary Resort in order to get a feel of the boat ride and still for some to enjoy the boat barbeque (prepared within the boat). Others go there to be part of the boat party, for some to enjoy a bridal shower, babes’ shower etc. It just depends on who and what one wants to feel but for most it is  the special boat ride services offered in customer friendly ways that are so endearing.

The Estuary Resort is just one place where, from sunrise to sunset, one can experience the cool wind that blows across the Atlantic Ocean to the mountain, a perfect place to relax, read and get the feel of natural beauty with classic music of one’s choice.

Of great advantage is that the road leading to the Resort is motorable as all types of vehicles can access this wonderful and fantastic place.

One unique attribute that the Estuary Resort has is that every time one pays a visit one experiences a new progress or improvement that was not visible or present during the last time or visit. With regards the types of food or dishes there is always something new and mouth-watering during any visit paid.

To lend credence to this ,over the weekend Management of the Resort unveiled another expansion which can best be described as adding to both the natural and artificial infrastructure which makes the Resort not to be found elsewhere within the West African sub-region.

It was thrilling to visibly notice that guests were held spellbound as they could not contain their admiration for what they were seeing with their eyes. They were even saying it glaringly.

If indeed there is any place that is ideal for comfortable rooms, parties and boat rides it must definitely be the Great Estuary Resort where one can really enjoy the beauty of nature.
