IPAM Holds 2nd Legal Aspect Employment Seminar

On Saturday 23rd April, 2022, the Institute Of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) held its 2nd Legal Aspect of Employment Seminar Organized by the Department of Business Administration and Entrepreneurship Development. This event took place at the new Freetown City Council auditorium.

The objective of the seminar was to acquaint and bring the practical relationship that exist between Employers and Employees, through constructive panel discussions, answers to questions and many more.

Some of the dignitaries at the event were,Hon. Minister of Labour and Social Security, the Deputy Registrar (IPAM), Dean Faculty of Business Administration, Director of Human Resources (NRA), HOD HR Dr. Hassan Mansaray, Director of Education Labour Congress, the Ombudsman Office, and the Director of Operations (NASSIT).

In an interview with Ibrahim Kebe a lecturer in the Faculty of Business Administration and Entrepreneurship at the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), he affirmed that the 2nd legal aspect is a seminar for Year Three students who are offering Business Administration. 

He went on to say that the essence of the seminar was to bring experts and regulators from different MDAs that regulates employment in Sierra Leone, for them to give their own insights and discuss the issues that is affecting the employment rate in the nation.

He emphasized that this means a lot for students as they get the opportunity to interact with the regulators, and to ask questions that go beyond the classroom – as this seminar was beyond the classroom engagement, because students will have the opportunity to receive answers from the right people as the information was first hand and very impactful. He furthered that education is changing, and it is more prudent to take the leading process outside the classroom and urged students to package their skills and be ready for the job market.

He concluded that the impact is lifelong, as students got to interact with stakeholders who on a normal circumstance they cannot meet or interact with them or receive opportunities for them to be taught about the importance of legal employment and the likes. 

The Human Resources Director for the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Mrs. Dora Tucker-Jambai, highlighted that employee records’ management is a very essential tool in tackling the issue of fake documents in public offices, and the regulations of the National Revenue Authority makes it mandatory for employees to keep records. 

She added that they are working assiduously to do a proper record keeping to ensure transparency and accountability.

She mentioned that just as the issue of fake degrees in Sierra Leone is on the rampage, she urged that this is an eye opener for Human Resource practitioners to be very vigilant. As a university it is mandatory now more than ever to do thorough background check on documents of students to prevent further issues on fake degrees and other academic awards.
