The National Revenue Authority (NRA) has announced that the deployment and installation of 10,000 upgraded Electronic Cash Registers (ECRs) across Sierra Leone is ongoing, as part of efforts to strengthen Goods and Services Tax (GST) administration and improve tax compliance.

In a public notice dated 19 October 2026, the NRA said the deployment, which commenced on 31 August 2026, would continue until completion in accordance with the established deployment plan.

The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Finance, procured the 10,000 upgraded devices to improve the recording of taxable business transactions, enhance transparency and strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation.

The Authority explained that taxpayers were initially required to apply to acquire the devices. However, with an adequate number of ECRs available for the current phase, the NRA has adopted a proactive approach by distributing and installing the machines at the premises of taxpayers identified as suitable for their use.

The NRA has reminded affected taxpayers that the devices must be used consistently and appropriately to record applicable business transactions in line with the Electronic Cash Register Regulations 2021.

Taxpayers receiving the upgraded machines are also required to file accurate tax returns within the prescribed deadlines, pay all taxes due on time and fulfil their obligations under the country’s tax laws and regulations.

The Authority further urged businesses to cooperate with NRA officials throughout the deployment and installation process, including related tax compliance activities.

The NRA emphasised that full compliance is expected from all taxpayers required to use the devices, encouraging businesses to ensure that the machines are properly utilised in their daily operations.

According to the Authority, the successful deployment and use of the upgraded ECRs will contribute to more effective GST administration, strengthen accountability and support the government’s efforts to mobilise domestic revenue for national development.

The NRA has therefore called on all affected taxpayers to cooperate fully with officials during the ongoing exercise and remain compliant with their tax obligations.
