A Profile of Leadership, Service and Youth Empowerment

In a country where leadership is often associated with titles, positions and public visibility, the story of Ansumana Keita offers a different perspective centred on service, advocacy, youth empowerment and community engagement.
Keita has been nominated among the 100 Most Impactful Sierra Leonean Leaders Awards 2026, an initiative of the West Africa Youth and Children’s Advocacy Network. His inclusion places him among Sierra Leoneans being recognised for their contributions to leadership and national development.
For Keita, the recognition comes against the backdrop of years of work focused on patriotism, youth empowerment, civic engagement, leadership development and community advocacy.
Who Is Ansumana Keita?
Ansumana Keita is a lawyer, youth advocate, activist and social change campaigner, best known for founding and leading the Patriotic Advocacy Network Sierra Leone (PAN).
According to PAN, Keita founded the organisation at the age of 17. The organisation has since grown into a nationwide youth-focused civic movement with more than 1,500 members. Its work promotes patriotism, unity, national consciousness, civic responsibility and positive social change, particularly among young people.
Keita’s leadership journey has also been shaped by his academic background in Mass Communication and Law, combining communication, advocacy and legal knowledge in his engagement with communities and young people.
Much of his work has focused on taking leadership beyond speeches and offices and into communities.
A Leader Focused on Youth Development
Through PAN, Keita has championed initiatives aimed at helping young Sierra Leoneans develop confidence, leadership capacity and a stronger sense of civic responsibility.
One of the organisation’s major initiatives is the Leadership and Public Speaking Masterclass (LPMC). The programme was introduced in 2024 after PAN identified gaps in leadership and communication skills among young people.
The first edition trained and certified 100 participants, while the 2025 edition trained 150. In 2026, another 150 young people were selected from more than 400 applicants.
The 2026 masterclass expanded beyond public speaking to include leadership, critical thinking, problem-solving, emotional intelligence, financial management, work ethic and the ethical use of artificial intelligence.
The initiative reflects Keita’s stated approach to youth leadership development: equipping young people with practical skills and opportunities to prepare them for leadership and civic participation.
His Impact Beyond PAN
Keita’s advocacy has also extended to schools and community-based initiatives.
In August 2026, he facilitated a session on young people, leadership and peacebuilding during a Peace, Integrity and Leadership Training organised under the Catch Them Young initiative.
The programme, held with the support of the Anti-Corruption Commission, brought together pupils from seven Western Area schools and focused on integrity, accountability, peace and responsible citizenship.
His involvement in youth development therefore extends beyond leadership training, with his activities also focusing on helping young people understand their civic responsibilities and use their voices constructively.
PAN has also been associated with initiatives including Public Speaking for Girls, the National Storytelling Festival (NSF), the Building A Nation Campaign, as well as patriotism and peacebuilding activities.
Why Keita Among the 100?
The organisers’ specific selection criteria for the 2026 awards have not been publicly detailed in the information reviewed. As a result, it would be inappropriate to attribute a particular reason for Keita’s selection to the organisers without a direct statement from them.
However, his documented activities provide context for his inclusion in an initiative focused on impactful leadership.
PAN was established in 2013 and has remained active for more than a decade. In February 2026, the organisation opened its first permanent office in Freetown, which it described as a milestone in its institutional development.
His work has also focused on developing other young leaders. The Leadership and Public Speaking Masterclass, for example, has trained and certified hundreds of young people across three editions.
His advocacy has consistently placed young people at the centre of issues including leadership, communication, patriotism, integrity, peacebuilding and civic responsibility.
Keita has also received recognition for his youth-development work. In 2022, he received an award for his contribution to youth development at the National Youth and Leadership Summit, organised by the Youths and Children Advocacy Panel.

The 2026 nomination comes against the backdrop of more than a decade of youth advocacy, institution-building, leadership training and community engagement.
Through PAN and other initiatives, Keita has created platforms aimed at encouraging young people to develop leadership skills, participate in civic activities and contribute to their communities.
At the conclusion of PAN’s 2026 Leadership and Public Speaking Masterclass, Keita told participants that effective leadership requires responsibility, discipline and sacrifice, reinforcing themes that have featured prominently in his advocacy work.
His nomination among the 100 Most Impactful Sierra Leonean Leaders of 2026 can therefore be viewed within the wider context of his documented record in youth development, civic advocacy and leadership training.
For Keita, the recognition represents another chapter in a journey that began with youth advocacy and has grown into a broader effort to create platforms for young Sierra Leoneans to develop their voices, skills and leadership capacity.
