The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) on September 2, 2026, held a Change of Command ceremony at the 14th Infantry Battalion at Maple Leaf Barracks in Pujehun District, transferring command from outgoing commander Lieutenant Colonel Koria Alice Sesay to incoming commander Lieutenant Colonel Samura.

The ceremony brought together senior RSLAF leadership, military officers, local authorities and community stakeholders. It highlighted the battalion’s mandate to maintain security in the Southern Region, as well as the military’s values of discipline, loyalty and cooperation with civilians.

Outgoing Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Sesay urged personnel to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities and national security duties. Appointed in August 2025, she made RSLAF history as the first female combatant officer to command a fighting unit. She expressed confidence in the battalion’s readiness and professionalism.

Incoming commander Lt. Col. Samura thanked the RSLAF leadership for the appointment and commended Sesay for her pioneering contributions, pledging to build on the battalion’s achievements in service to the nation.

Local leaders and residents praised Sesay for her administrative leadership and infrastructure improvements at Maple Leaf Barracks. District Officer Adama Bandajuma Sowa highlighted projects initiated during her tenure, including a perimeter fence, a new canteen and a dedicated development centre.

Sesay also established the battalion’s first formal awards programme to recognise dedicated and long-serving personnel, contributing to improved morale and welfare among troops.

The change of command marks a seamless transition as the 14th Infantry Battalion continues its role in promoting peace, regional security and national stability in Southern Sierra Leone.
