The Leader of the Opposition in Sierra Leone’s Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, has cautioned that any constitutional amendment must secure the required two-thirds majority vote to be valid.

Speaking during parliamentary proceedings, Hon. Kargbo stressed that amendments to the Constitution must strictly comply with the legal threshold, stating: “Anything less than 99.33 is less than two-thirds and cannot pass any amendment.”

He expressed confidence in the Speaker of Parliament’s commitment to upholding the law, noting that the Opposition has no doubt about the Speaker’s ability to ensure due process.

“The opposition does not doubt the ability of Mr Speaker to follow the law, and today’s sitting is no different,” Hon. Kargbo said.

The Opposition Leader clarified that his side is not against constitutional reform but may raise objections to proposed changes affecting specific sections of the Constitution.

“We are not against amending the Constitution; we may be against the amendment of certain sections of the Constitution,” he stated.

The debate on the Constitutional Amendment Bill is currently ongoing in Parliament, with lawmakers continuing discussions on the proposed changes.
