Presidential candidate for the Sierra Leone Bar Association, Madam Martina Baindu Egbenda, together with her vice-presidential running mate, Madam Nicky Spencer-Coker, and members of her campaign team, held a productive engagement with legal practitioners of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) as part of their ongoing consultations ahead of the Sierra Leone Bar Association Annual General Meeting.
The discussions centred on a shared vision of rebuilding trust, restoring unity, strengthening the independence of the Bar, and shaping a more responsive, inclusive, and accountable legal profession.
Addressing the gathering, Madam Egbenda reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to the rule of law, constitutionalism, and the welfare of every legal practitioner. “My Executive will protect the independence of the Bar and introduce meaningful welfare initiatives that benefit every colleague because every lawyer matters.”
She stressed that the SLBA must remain an independent professional body whose decisions are guided solely by the Constitution, the law, and the collective interests of its members.
Highlighting her credentials, she noted that she has dedicated more than 13 years plus as legal practitioner, having served in the Law Officers’ Department, the NRA, as Treasurer of the SLBA, and currently as the Administrator and Registrar General of Sierra Leone. She said this broad experience has equipped her with the competence, integrity, and accountability required to lead the Bar effectively.
On the issue of the controversial E-registration exercise, Madam Egbenda reiterated her principled position. “My team and I have consistently opposed the E-registration process because we believe the Memorandum and Articles of Association provide a clear legal framework that must be respected. The rule of law begins with respecting our own governing instruments.”
Madam Egbenda also outlined her vision for expanding opportunities for members through continuous professional development, including specialised training, increased scholarship opportunities, stronger international legal partnerships, structured mentorship programmes, and improved welfare initiatives.
Speaking on behalf of the RSLAF legal practitioners, M.B.S Kamara Esq. thanked Madam Martina Baindu Egbenda and her team for engaging with them and listening attentively to their concerns and aspirations.
He assured the delegation of their commitment to participate in the Annual General Meeting and exercise their democratic right to vote.
She concluded with a message of unity and shared purpose. *”This campaign has never been about one individual. It is about the future of our profession. It is about building a Bar that is more inclusive, more responsive, more courageous, and more united. From our most senior colleagues to our youngest practitioners, we share one profession, one responsibility, and one future. The future of the Bar is not something we wait for—it is something we build together.”
