The Berny’s Hope Foundation on Tuesday, 31st March 2026, organized a one-day empowerment training for women and girls, focusing on leadership, media ethics, legal awareness, creativity, and personal development.

The training, held at the Africell American Corner in Freetown, brought together participants from various communities, aiming to build their capacity and equip them with practical knowledge for personal and professional growth.

Speaking at the event, the Country Director of the Foundation, Mr. Adel Dandas, said the initiative formed part of activities marking International Women’s Day. He noted that the training was guided by the theme “Give to Gain,” which underscores the importance of investing in girls for sustainable community development.

“This training reflects our commitment to giving back to society by investing in the potential of young girls. When girls are empowered with the right knowledge, skills, and confidence, they become agents of positive change in their communities,” he said.

Mr. Dandas added that educating girls on leadership, media engagement, and creativity would not only uplift them individually but also contribute to national development.

One of the facilitators, Madam Aminata Iris Bangura, a media professional, delivered a session on media ethics and responsible communication. She highlighted different forms of media, including traditional and digital platforms, and stressed the need for responsible usage, particularly among young people.

“In today’s digital age, the media is a powerful tool that can either build or destroy. Young women must learn to use media platforms responsibly to educate, inform, and advocate for positive change,” she said.

She further encouraged participants to embrace advocacy, noting that their voices can influence policies, challenge injustice, and promote the rights of women and girls.

Another facilitator, Sarah Kamara Esq., led a session on legal frameworks affecting women and children. She explained key legislations, including the Child Rights Act and the Sexual Offences Act, and emphasized the importance of understanding one’s rights and responsibilities.

“Knowing your rights is the first step towards protecting yourself and others. With rights also come responsibilities, and informed decisions are essential to safeguarding your future,” she stated.

She also urged participants to prioritize education and personal development.

The training featured additional sessions on leadership, creativity, and motivation, aimed at inspiring participants to become confident and innovative individuals. Representatives from Healey International Foundation and the Woman Tok organization delivered goodwill messages, encouraging the girls to take advantage of opportunities that promote their growth.

Participants expressed appreciation to the organizers, describing the training as impactful and transformative. Many noted that the knowledge gained would help them make informed decisions and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

The event concluded with the presentation of certificates to participants, marking the successful completion of the training and reinforcing the Foundation’s commitment to empowering women and girls across Sierra Leone.
