The Internal Elections Management Committee (IEMC) of the All Peoples Congress (APC) has officially halted the party’s Ward Elections, originally scheduled for Saturday, 14th February 2026, citing insufficient funding and inadequate preparation time. The decision was communicated in a formal position letter issued to the APC National Secretary General and all party stakeholders on 10th February 2026.
According to the IEMC, the party faces significant logistical and operational challenges that make it impossible to conduct free, fair, and credible elections. The Committee explained that only 31.5% of the approved Ward Elections budget was released, with just 16% of the issued cheque honoured by the bank. The deadline for the full release of funds, 9th February 2026, passed without compliance.
The Committee highlighted that these constraints directly affect the ability to:
- Recruit, train, and remunerate polling personnel, including presiding officers;
- Secure adequate transport and logistics for distributing election materials and deploying staff;
- Finalize approved candidate lists and voter registers;
- Properly execute all pre-election preparations within the remaining four days.
The IEMC emphasized that proceeding under such conditions would violate the APC Constitution, undermine democratic principles, expose the electoral process to irregularities, and compromise the integrity of the party’s internal elections.
Haji Hassan Kamara, National Coordinator of the IEMC, stated that the responsibility for the postponement lies entirely with the failure to release the approved budget on time. He reassured stakeholders that the Committee remains ready to conduct the elections immediately upon receipt of the necessary funds and sufficient preparation time.
The IEMC acknowledged the disappointment this postponement may cause among party members but stressed that conducting elections under the current constraints would inflict greater harm on the party’s democratic processes than a temporary delay.
The Committee concluded that the halt reflects its commitment to upholding constitutional standards and safeguarding the integrity of APC’s internal electoral processes.
