The political atmosphere in Kailahun District is charged with renewed excitement and hope following the news that one of their most respected sons, John Oponjo Benjamin (J.O.B.), has declared his intention to contest for the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The people of Kailahun, a district historically loyal to the SLPP, have welcomed the announcement with resounding applause. In an emotionally charged gathering at the Kailahun Town Field, community members, young and old, hailed Mr. Benjamin as “a development pillar, a unifier, and a tested leader.”

“J.O.B. is the pillar behind the transformation of the Kailahun District Council during his tenure as Chairman,”one elder recounted. “We believe this is the moment for the SLPP to return the favour and support his leadership vision for Sierra Leone.”
Local businessman Mohamed Gobeh expressed deep sentiments on behalf of the Eastern Region. “We have always supported candidates from other regions. This time, we want a chance. The Easterners have credible, capable candidates like Alie Kabba and John Oponjo Benjamin. It’s high time the SLPP allows one of our own to carry the flag,”he insisted.

The business community around Kailahun Roundabout and Court Barry also voiced support. They praised J.O.B. for his foresight in empowering youths through technological training initiatives such as the AITH Centre he served as CEO, where free software trainings were offered to young people during Hon. Matthew Sahr Nyuma’s as head in Kenema.

According to a group of young women and men at the town field, they had long wished for J.O.B. to declare his intention. Now that he has, they are ready to mobilize* and build a grassroots political base in Kailahun. “We only ask that he or his representatives come down and start the engagement. The support is already here,”they said.
In light of these developments, political observers are paying close attention to how the SLPP’s internal dynamics will unfold. Many believe J.O.B.’s candidacy offers the party an opportunity to consolidate its base in the East while presenting a well-rounded, experienced candidate with a strong record of public service.

As one supporter put it: “If President Bio truly wants the SLPP to succeed beyond his tenure, he should support the most competent and experienced hand, John Oponjo Benjamin.”

The political momentum is building, and Kailahun stands ready.
