Former Secretary General of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Umaru Napoleon Koroma, has responded to recent accusations by First Lady Fatima Bio that he was among the masterminds behind an incident during the State Opening of Parliament.

In a statement posted online, Koroma dismissed the allegations as “funny,” stressing that dishonesty was never associated with his character. He explained that his actions at the event — including dancing in the hall — were simply a celebration with grassroots supporters after a party victory.

“My loyalty is to the SLPP and our leader, President Bio, from whom I only take directives,” he said. “Since 2017, we have only had one leader in the SLPP, and that is President Bio. You either obey him or you don’t get your way in the party.”

Koroma highlighted his long-standing service to the SLPP since 1996, noting that he left his legal career to help the party gain and maintain power, serving for eight years “without blemish.” He maintained that he does not plot against anyone, describing himself as “not a coward” and someone who “doesn’t hide behind his fingers.”

He further stated that beyond the conference hall, his celebration had ended, adding that he would “defend the Office of the First Lady any day, any time it comes under attack” and that he would never attack a woman, “let alone the wife of our leader.”

Describing the dance as “innocent,” Koroma said his recent remarks were from the heart and not influenced by anyone. He reaffirmed his commitment to the SLPP, saying, “Even when I am called a ‘dog’ or other names in the discharge of my duties, I will not take offence.”

Koroma concluded by stressing that the SLPP would remain strong and continue to govern the country.
