In a moment of national pride and celebration, Hon. Haja Miatta Amara, Member of Parliament for Constituency 112 in the Western Area Rural District, has been recognized as one of the 50 Most Influential Sierra Leonean Women for 2025. The prestigious award highlights her outstanding contributions to governance, women’s empowerment, and community development.

Hon. Amara, a trailblazer in Sierra Leone’s political landscape, is widely respected for her unwavering commitment to public service and grassroots transformation. Her recognition not only celebrates her personal achievements but also represents a significant milestone for the All People’s Congress (APC) Party, under which she has served with distinction.

From community outreach to parliamentary leadership, Hon. Amara’s journey reflects a deep-seated passion for uplifting vulnerable groups. Her humanitarian work began after returning from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where she worked closely with marginalized women, orphans, and persons living with disabilities. This led to the creation of the Haja Miatta Support Group, with operations in both Kenema and the Western Rural areas.

Later, after training as a professional nurse in the United States, she returned to Sierra Leone to serve her people. Driven by the desire to promote food security and women’s empowerment, she founded the Mountain Agricultural Development Organisation (MADO), which supports women farmers and promotes self-reliance in rural communities.

In 2018, Hon. Amara made history by becoming the first woman elected to represent Constituency 112, defeating eight male candidates and one female contender in a fiercely contested race. She was re-elected in the 2023 parliamentary elections under the Proportional Representation system

In Parliament, Hon. Miatta Amara is a powerful advocate for the underrepresented. She serves as:

Chairperson of the Social Welfare Committee

Member of the Health, Energy, and Labour Committees

She has played a key role in drafting critical legislation, including the landmark Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act. Beyond the legislative floor, she is active in community initiatives—providing scholarships, distributing learning materials, and championing girls’ education across the Western Rural district.

As Female Conkus Leader for the APC in Parliament and Conkus Leader for the Western Area Rural District, Hon. Amara continues to champion inclusive policies and empower women across the political spectrum.

Hon. Miatta Amara has twice been listed among the “30 Most Influential Women in Western Area Rural,” and she once contested for the position of Deputy Speaker of Parliament, demonstrating courage and leadership in a male-dominated space.

A proud mother and grandmother, she is celebrated not only for her political accomplishments but also for her humility, strength, and visionary approach to leadership.

This national recognition as one of the 50 Most Influential Sierra Leonean Women is a testament to her trailblazing efforts and sets a powerful example for future generations of female leaders. It is also a moment of pride for the APC Party, which continues to promote women’s participation in politics and public service.

Congratulations to Hon. Haja Miatta Amara for this well-deserved honor. Her story is a shining beacon of what dedicated and compassionate leadership can achieve in Sierra Leone.
