The Opposition Whip in Sierra Leone’s Parliament, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara (AKK), has publicly questioned the credibility of a recently released Afrobarometer report, which suggests that corruption in Sierra Leone has declined by over 40%.

Speaking in an interview with Liberty Online TV, Hon. Kamara argued that the report does not reflect the current realities on the ground, particularly with regard to ongoing allegations of misuse of public funds and the lack of accountability in key government sectors.

“The report is misleading. It overlooks major cases of corruption that are widely known but have not been addressed,” Hon. AKK stated.

He cited the Ministry of Agriculture as one example, alleging that millions of Leones were spent on faulty equipment.

“Those responsible were quietly relieved of their duties, yet they continue to live lavishly and invest heavily across the country, while ordinary farmers still lack basic tools and support,” he said.

Hon. Kamara also referenced the controversial Tombodu–Bormu (Tumaborm) Project, claiming that large sums of money were squandered with no accountability.

“Billions have disappeared, and those involved are seen driving luxurious vehicles and living comfortably, without any charges or investigations brought against them,” he added.

The Afrobarometer, a nonpartisan research network, conducts public perception surveys on issues such as governance, democracy, and public service delivery across Africa. While its latest findings suggest a positive shift in public opinion on corruption in Sierra Leone, Hon. Kamara insists that the lived experiences of citizens tell a different story.

He called on civil society organizations, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and development partners to dig deeper into ongoing corruption allegations and to demand greater transparency and accountability in governance.
