APC Announces Urgent Press Conference to Address Tripartite Recommendation 78 on Sierra Leone’s Future Electoral System

The All People’s Congress (APC) has called for an urgent press conference to be held tomorrow, Wednesday, June 25th, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at the party’s National Headquarters in Freetown.

According to a statement from the APC Publicity Secretariat, the purpose of the press engagement is to present the party’s official position on Recommendation 78 of the recently released Tripartite Committee Report, which deals specifically with the electoral system to be used in future elections in Sierra Leone.

“This is a pivotal moment for our democracy,” the statement emphasized, adding that the APC is “committed to transparent engagement on this national issue.

”The Tripartite Committee, which was formed following the June 2023 elections to review and recommend electoral and democratic reforms, included representatives from the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), the opposition APC, and international partners.

Recommendation 78 is believed to touch on one of the most consequential aspects of the report — the type of electoral system Sierra Leone should adopt going forward, whether Proportional Representation (PR), First-Past-The-Post (FPTP), or a hybrid of both.

The APC has previously voiced concerns over the use of the PR system in the 2023 general elections, a move the party believes was imposed without broad national consensus.

All accredited media institutions, civil society organizations, and members of the public are invited to attend the press briefing, which is expected to draw significant attention amid ongoing discussions on electoral reforms.

The APC is expected to use the opportunity to articulate its vision for a credible and inclusive electoral framework, as well as its expectations for the implementation of the Tripartite Report’s recommendations.
