In a joint communique issued by Mr. Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrah and Ms. Wara Serry-Kamal, both contenders for the presidency of the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA), several critical issues surrounding the impending Annual General Meeting (AGM) have been highlighted.

The communique underscores the candidates’ intention to contest for the presidency at the upcoming AGM scheduled for 17th-18th May 2024. It outlines a series of unsuccessful attempts to convene meetings with key stakeholders, including the Inspector General of Police and the outgoing SLBA executive, to address pertinent issues regarding security and the conduct of the elections in Kenema city.

Accommodation: Adequate arrangements must be made to accommodate the estimated over 700 members expected to attend the AGM at Dorwalia Hotel in Kenema.

Membership List: The list of paid-up members must be circulated and posted at a conspicuous place at Dorwalia Hotel by 16th May 2024, as per a court order dated 10th May 2024.

Security: Comprehensive security measures should be implemented to ensure the safety of all attendees, with a joint meeting of security personnel, executives, and aspirants to address concerns.

Agenda Circulation: The agenda of the AGM and all filed resolutions must be circulated to the membership by 15th May 2024, in accordance with a court order dated 14th May 2024.

Elections Management: A meeting between the executive and representatives of all three presidential teams should be convened by 16th May 2024 to agree on election terms, conduct, and the appointment of a Returning Officer.

Both candidates emphasize that their demands aim to ensure the success and integrity of the AGM. They affirm their commitment to ethical behavior, transparency, and acceptance of the election outcome. They urge the current executive to uphold the values of the SLBA and ensure a successful transition.

The joint communique serves as a call to action for the SLBA executive to address pressing concerns and uphold democratic principles ahead of the AGM. It underscores the candidates’ commitment to a fair and transparent electoral process while urging stakeholders to prioritize the association’s legacy and values.
