The SLPP Government has failed seven out of twenty MCC indicators. The current government of President Julius Maada Bio is making much noise about making gains which have attracted Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) funding from America in the last couple of years. The reality is that, this government by right should have made more gains within the three years it has been in governance.
Political pundits say the SLPP Government has been in governance from 2018 to 2021 (three years, eight months to be precise), which is close to like 71% of its tenure in office. This, in effect, according to political pundits, means that, much more could have been achieved by now (like conquering at least 15 or more of the 20 MCC goals) had the SLPP Government been a bit more realistic in its approach to the bread and butter issues which it used as a campaign strategy but woefully failed to apply.
It is worthy to note that while the SLPP Government spokesman at the Outreach Unit in the Ministry of Information and Communications, Joe Sesay was vociferous over AYV TV yesterday Thursday 11th November, 2021 during its Wake Up Programme, claiming that the SLPP Government did far better than its neighbours, the reality is the opposite.
The MCC report which classed Sierra Leone also classed Benin as passing 14 indicators, 96 per cent on corruption; The Gambia passing 13 indicators, 85 per cent on corruption; Senegal passing 13 indicators, 98 per cent on corruption; Burkina Faso passing 15 indicators, 92 per cent on corruption and Cape Verde passing 15 indicators, 94 per cent on corruption among several others.
So, for the SLPP Government to say it is making headway over corruption on the MCC index while its neighbours are floundering is a statement that is neither here nor there.
On the other hand, it is true that the SLPP Government passed thirteen (13) of the twenty MCC goals. But, these thirteen MCC indicators are overshadowed by the seven failed MCC indicators which leave much more to be desired. According to informed sources, the SLPP Government is not likely to dip its hand into the MCC basket this time round because the MCC indicators which could have led to the country receiving funds from the MCC basket were the very ones the SLPP Government failed to achieve.
In the meantime, most members of the general public believe it is not too late for the SLPP administration to rethink its strategies to improve on the standard of living and do what it can to resolve the persistent hike in the price of basic goods including foodstuff.
