The European Union Delegation in Sierra Leone has engaged the leadership of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) as debate continues over the government’s proposed constitutional amendments.

The engagement, held on Thursday, 13 August 2026, was described by the EU Delegation as a “rich and informative exchange” with the APC leadership, although details of the discussions were not publicly disclosed.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of heightened political debate over the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which has faced resistance from the APC.

APC Members of Parliament recently walked out of Parliament during proceedings on the Bill following disagreements over the consideration and passage of the proposed amendments.

The government has maintained that the proposed constitutional changes are intended to advance reforms arising from the Justice Cowan Constitutional Review and recommendations of the Tripartite Committee.

The APC, however, has continued to raise concerns about aspects of the proposed amendments and the process through which the Bill has been considered.

The latest EU-APC engagement comes at a time of renewed political and public attention on the constitutional reform process, with discussions continuing over the proposed amendments and their potential implications for Sierra Leone’s democratic governance.

Parliament has indicated that the Constitutional Amendment Bill requires a two-thirds majority of Members of Parliament for passage.
