The United States Embassy in Freetown has officially confirmed the resignation of U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Bryan D. Hunt, effective September 17, 2025. According to the Embassy, Ambassador Hunt stepped down for personal reasons linked to family medical considerations and will not be returning to Sierra Leone.

In the interim, the Embassy will continue to be led by Chargé d’Affaires Jared Yancey.

Ambassador Hunt, who served in Sierra Leone for two years, is credited with strengthening the U.S.–Sierra Leone partnership, particularly in the areas of health, security, and economic prosperity. In a farewell message to Embassy staff, he expressed deep appreciation for his time in the country.

“I have loved every moment of my time in Sierra Leone and deeply admire the work you all do to advance the U.S.–Sierra Leone relationship,” Hunt stated.

The Embassy reassured that the United States remains firmly committed to its partnership with Sierra Leone and will continue working closely with the government and people to build on the progress made under Hunt’s tenure.
