Suspend Ahmed Saybom Kanu now! …SLPP stakeholders Demand

Key stakeholders and supporters of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) have raised concerns and called for a comprehensive investigation into the violent activities that marred the party’s lower-level elections, particularly in Tonkolili District. The house of the party’s Youth Leader was reportedly burned down by thugs suspected to have been hired by one of the contenders for the party’s District Chairmanship, Ahmed Saybom Kanu. Allegations have surfaced pointing to Kanu as a central figure responsible for orchestrating the violence.
The Sierra Leone Police Force has initiated investigations into the matter, gathering statements from individuals serving as witnesses. The gravity of the situation has prompted calls for the immediate suspension of Mr. Saybom Kanu pending the conclusion of the investigations to ensure a fair and transparent process.

Umaru Napoleon-Koroma, the National Secretary-General of the SLPP, expressed deep concern over the reports of violence and misconduct during the lower-level elections. In a press statement, he emphasized that such actions contradict the core democratic principles of the SLPP and will not be tolerated. Koroma condemned any form of violence, intimidation, or disruption in party activities, affirming that those responsible for the reported incidents would be held accountable.
“We are deeply concerned about reports of violence and misconduct in certain areas. Such actions go against the core democratic principles of the SLPP and will not be tolerated,” stated Koroma. He assured that thorough investigations would be conducted, and individuals found culpable would face the appropriate consequences. Moreover, Koroma extended sincere sympathy to those affected and pledged that justice would prevail.
Additionally, the Ahmad Tejan Kabbah (ATK) Foundation, renowned as a bastion of peace and democracy in Sierra Leone, issued a press statement expressing profound sadness and serious apprehension regarding the outbreak of violent skirmishes and tensions that marred the SLPP lower-level elections across several critical constituencies on the same day. The Foundation strongly condemned the incidents that transpired in Constituency 48 (Mile 91) and Constituency 50 (Magburaka), both located in Tonkolili District.
As the investigations unfold and stakeholders demand accountability and justice, the integrity of the SLPP’s electoral processes and commitment to upholding democratic values will be put to the test. The outcomes of the investigations and subsequent actions taken by the party leadership will undoubtedly carry significant implications for the future trajectory of the SLPP and its reputation as a political entity dedicated to serving the people and advancing the nation’s interests.
