In a recent press release, the Sierra Leone Police has officially declared the removal of Mrs. Mira Yainkain Dumbuya, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, from its ranks with immediate effect. The decision was made due to her prolonged absence without leave, exceeding 21 days, as per Rule 26(1) of the Police (Discipline) Regulations, 2001.
Mrs. Dumbuya’s dismissal is linked to her failure to resume duty following the expiration of her three-year extended tour of duty on secondment in the United Nations Mission. The Inspector General of Police had approved her initial two-year deployment to the United Nations in New York, USA, in 2020, followed by a one-year extension.
The press release outlined the chronology of Mrs. Dumbuya’s secondment, highlighting the culmination of her three-year tour on January 16, 2024. Despite the non-approval of an extension, Mrs. Dumbuya did not return to duty but instead shared her resignation letter on social media.
The Sierra Leone Police accused Mrs. Dumbuya of contravening multiple disciplinary rules, including communicating sensitive matters without authorization, failing to comply with standing orders, and engaging in conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline. The breach of Rule 26(1), specifically being absent without leave for over 21 days, led to her immediate removal from the force.
The press release also mentioned Mrs. Dumbuya’s absence from duty spanning from January 17, 2024, to February 22, 2024. The Sierra Leone Police emphasized that the decision to strike her off the strength of the force was taken in accordance with established disciplinary regulations, demonstrating the commitment to maintaining discipline and integrity within the police force.
