More than fifty Sierra Leonean students currently studying in the Russian Federation are facing significant challenges as a result of the prolonged delay in receiving their stipends.
Abdul Karim, the President of Sierra Leonean Students in Russia, along with other students, is calling on the Sierra Leonean government to disburse the overdue funds, which have not been provided for over a year.
Karim emphasized the critical situation the students are in, citing health issues, accommodation difficulties, and the lack of resources for daily necessities as major concerns. He highlighted that the lack of resources has left Sierra Leonean students in Russia struggling.
Sorie Aruna Kamara, a third-year medical student, also expressed frustration over the delays in stipend payments. Kamara pointed out that the absence of stipends has made it challenging for students to cover crucial expenses like medical care, food, and housing. He mentioned that financial constraints have even led some students to change their courses, underscoring the financial pressures exacerbated by the high cost of living in Russia.
Kamara reiterated the students’ primary objective of studying and returning home to contribute to Sierra Leone’s progress. He made an appeal to the government to expedite the disbursement of their stipends so that they can continue their education and work towards achieving their academic and professional aspirations
